The Battle of the Bookworms Competition is an annual inter-schools event to promote reading and encourage interaction amongst high schools in our community and was recently been held for the first time at Irene Village Mall.
The aim is for the learners to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge on eight selected books they had to read in preparation as well as a rapid response section.
Four high schools, Sutherland, Lyttleton Manor, Centurion and Swartkop competed for the honours in a fun quiz.

Die Universiteit van Pretoria (UP) het die Goue Toekenning (tweede in die geheel) van die PMR.Africa-maatskappy gewen tydens die “Pretoria/Tshwane Municipal District Leaders and Achievers”-toekennings wat op 5 Oktober 2010 by die Pretoria Buiteklub gehou was.
Die toekenning is gemaak na aanleiding van ‘n navorsingsproses waar maatskappye en instellings geskat word gebaseer op respondente se persepsies, met ‘n sterk fokus op evaluering en meting van kliëntediens en -tevredenheid.

Die Centurion Sakekamer het op 26 Oktober hul maandelikse netwerksessie by Kleinkaap Funksie & Onthaalarea gehou.
Ten oordeel aan die getal teenwoordigers was dit duidelik dat die netwerksessies groot byval vind en dat die behoefte om met ander besighede kontak te maak, hierdeur bevredig word.
Die spoednetwerksessie, wat die algemene sessie vooraf gegaan het, was weer baie geslaagd en het lede die vinnige en direkte kontak baie waardeer.

The South African Chef’s Association (SACA) celebrated International Chef’s day on Wednesday, October 20.
SACA along with five Gauteng based cooking schools held the “Fill the Chef’s Hat” charity initiative at Zwartkop High School in Centurion, in celebration to the profession and craft.
Corne Ströh, organising coordinator of the event, said that the idea was to fill the chef’s hat with as much non-perishable food items as possible.

Die ATKV Centurion se Omgee- en Bewusmakinsveldtog fokus hierdie jaar op vermiste persone in Suid-Afrika.
Volgens Luit. Kol. Fanie van Deventer van die SAPD Hoofkantoor, is bykans vyfduisend kinders en volwassenes in Suid-Afrika tans as vermis by die SAPD aangemeld.
Voorbidding is vir die vermiste persone, hul ouers en naasbestaandes gedoen voordat die ATKV Centurion ballonne met van die vermistes se foto’s daaraan vasgeheg, die lug ingestuur het.

Vier Pretorianers is onlangs tydens die FAK Prestige-aand in Pretoria met Nasionale Toekennings vir Onderwys- en Kultuurprestasies vereer.
Retha Bloem is met die HB en MJ Thom-Onderwystoekenning vereer terwyl Etienne Theart, Sakkie Kotze en prof. Joseph Stanford aldrie met die FAK-Toekenning vir besondere Kultuurprestasie bekroon is.

GEM Village, Irene, held their annual fete on Saturday 16 October 2010 raising funds for the village.
There were various stalls with food, clothes, jewellery, gifts and handmade products.
A white elephant stall and even a stall with old money including the largest bank note in the world, a Zimbabwe’s one trillion dollar which was selling for R50.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 57 Branch has been busy at work over the past few months informing voters of DA policy and solving voter problems.
It has also been encouraging eligible residents to register to vote during the forthcoming voter registration drive taking place on 5 & 6 February and 5 & 6 March 2011 in preparation for the local government elections taking place during 2011.
The branch, together with the Ward Councillor for Ward 57, councillor Clive Napier, are assisting residents in addressing many of the local issues affecting them …

Doringkloof Resident’s Association held their annual beerfest on 9 October at the Doringkloof Mall.
There was a fleamarket with many stalls, jumping castles and entertainment as well as the beerfest area where the bands entertained the crowds.
Unfortunately, during the day the weather was very hot and windy and the bands had to leave due to a heavy storm early in the evening.
