Affordable motoring now available in Centurion

Ariva is a joint venture initiative between the JD Group and Imperial Holdings specifically incorporated to bring affordable motoring to the South African public.
Ownership of a car can be full of surprises and not always pleasant ones.
General cost inflation, interest rate fluctuations, forever increasing insurance premiums and of course the unexpected maintenance bills all conspire to make budgeting and cash flow management impossible and of course they all increase your cost of motoring.
With the ownership of a car there is also the unseen cost associated with the drop in the …

In 1985 I decided that the time had come to purchase my last set of new wheels and as things were getting so out of line, we would shortly not be able to afford a new car.
This done and dusted a ceiling of R40,000 was set and the search was on.
At this stage of my life I was employed by a Mazda dealership, but with R40,000 in my sights I started shopping in the upper price bracket.
I had three choices, a Mercedes 230E, BMW323I or Ford Sierra XR6.
I phoned the …

Now things have changed. I am about to by-pass many years of memories but they will remain relevant, so bare with me, for I have jumped from the 1960’s to today.
In the early 60’s we drove and owned Renault R8 Gordini’s Ford Cortina GT’s and many other wonderful vehicles in their time.
We modified them, fitted Hi-lift cam’s, free-flow exhaust’s, modified heads, double valve springs, gas flowed ports and we almost polished the sump guards.
But to no avail, we managed to get the 0-60 mph down from 10.9 secs to 10.2.
What …

There are so many memories than one forgets about during your transition from birth to maturity and beyond.
I often sit and think (most times I just sit) about various two and four wheel vehicles I have had the pleasure of experiencing during my life-time.
Some were part of my life and some were fantasies or just things you read about, or bits of bric-a-brac from more travelled folks that are only too pleased to share their experiences with one, and even bring forth brochures and spec sheets, duly collected on their …

The Pretoria Old Motor Club Gears up for the country’s biggest motor show

It was back in 1982 that the Pretoria Old Motor Club first organised what has become the biggest car show in South Africa.
On 7August 2011 the 29th running of the event takes place of what is by far and away the biggest motor show in the country and depending on the weather, the organisers are expecting between 2 000 and 3 000 vintage, veteran  post-war classic and special-interest cars to show up.
The event will once again be held at the Zwartkops Raceway on the R55, south-west of Pretoria, near Laudium.
The charm of …

I find myself in a quandary, whether to continue with the history of what happened to the Granada’s successor or to revert to some history prior to the event.
It seems that the editor believes that one should not leave readers in suspense but finalize the matter at hand, so here we go!
On arrival back at home after towing the Granada on a mobi-jack, the New Cortina 3.0 Leisure bakkie was heard to have some uncanny noises emanating from within the engine compartment.
I thought it prudent to drive her down to …

First driving simulators arrived in South Africa

Simulators are widely used to teach pilots how to fly aeroplanes and in other countries been used as part of drivers’ education at schools for decades.
The simulators are finally available in South Africa and learner drivers can now acquire basic driving skills in a safe, yet realistic environment before they hit the road.
The high quality simulators, which are imported, are built into mobile units to allow access to anywhere where there is a demand for driver training.
Even with no driving experience, learner drivers can learn to drive in a relaxed …

Chapter 3 of the Granada debacle.
Saturday morning arrived in all its glory and off we trudged to Machadadorp, firstly advised the hill- billies to collect one Granada and “MAAK REG” and then phoned the Ford dealer in Belfast to find out if they had a new Ford 3.0 Leisure bakkie in stock.
“Ja oom, rooi of rooi?” OK we’ll take a red.
Then a call to the bank for finance. Approved, now off to Carolina to sign the HP contract, back to the caravan park and as per rural culture, the salesman …
